Going on a white-water rafting trip with fellow students or a church group? Don’t be surprised if one of the people that go with you is actually an undercover police officer spying on you in the name of “security.”
“In addition to the regularly scheduled events (Rafting), the group prayed at least four times a day, and much of the conversation was spent discussing Islam and was religious in nature.”
This is from a police report filed by an undercover NYPD officer who spied on a group of students from City College New York.
The NYPD has been infiltrating churches, school clubs, and political groups to spy on people who have committed no crimes (nor made any threats). Often the only reason for the spying is that someone in the organization has expressed political dissent or openly opposes a government policy. You can bet that the NYPD is not the only police department surveilling innocent civilians.
“I think this idea of secret police following you around is terrifying. It really has an effect of spreading fear and squashing dissent.” – Jordan Flaherty
Your tax dollars are being spent to spy on you. We need to seriously reconsider whether it is right to trample our civil rights in order to “protect ourselves” from non-violent demonstrators. This is not protecting us from anything. Based on these reports, we need protection from our own government and police.
