I’m really excited about deep sea exploration after I podcast I listened to yesterday. Dr. Kirsten Sanford interviewed “Southern Fried Scientist” Andrew Thaler on her show, Dr. Kiki’s Science Hour. The topics were deep ocean hydrothermal vents, the sea life that depends on them, their mineral composition, and some of the amazing species that have been recently discovered on these geological structures.
New species are being continuously discovered, and humans being have still only explored 1% of the ocean floor. Animals found living in extreme heat and pressure conditions prove wrong any who thought life couldn’t survive in such a place. After learning about bacteria in tar pits, life built on arsenic, and volcanic bacteria, diversity and robustness seem to be the status quo for Earth-based life. This may mean the likelihood of life existing on another planet, moon, or even asteroid is higher than anyone expected.
Are you curious about undiscovered creatures living on our planet? 200-year old worms? Species only ever seen feeding on a drifting whale carcass? Then check out some of these people and resources to learn more about the abyss:
Southern Fried Science
Andrew Thaler is a “Southern Fried Scientist” and deep sea biologist who, among other things, studies the fascinating hydrothermal vents and their ecosystems. His twitter handle is @SFriedScientist and has blog posts and comics on southernfriedscience.com.
The Blue Planet: The Deep
A fascinating documentary that brings you into the deep. Narrated by David Attenborough. This YouTube video gives a preview, and the full movie is available on Netflix.
Dr. Kiki’s Science Hour
